Ice Fishing Gear for Beginners: A First-Trip Checklist
By Wellslate Manager

A plain checklist for a first ice fishing trip: the rod, the small gear, light and warmth, and the safety steps to take before you step onto the ice.
Ice fishing looks like it needs a lot of gear, but a first trip does not. You need a way to fish a small hole, a way to stay warm while you wait, and a plan for staying safe on the ice. This checklist sticks to that. Prices are as listed on October 20, 2026, and can change, so check the product page before you order.
Safety first
Ice is never the same from one lake, or one week, to the next. Before you go:
- Check current ice conditions with your state wildlife agency, a local bait shop, or other anglers who have been out recently.
- Go with someone on your first trip, and tell another person where you will be and when you expect to be back.
- Stay off ice you are unsure about. No fish is worth it.
- Check your state's fishing license and regulations, including any limits on lines per angler.
The rod
Ice rods are short because you are fishing straight down a hole, often while sitting close to it. The Ice Fishing Rod, 60 cm, Fiberglass ($22) is a short fiberglass rod, 60 cm (about 24 in), with a curved, comfortable grip. The reel and line are not included, so pair it with a small reel and light line suited to the fish you are after; a local bait shop can tell you what is biting.
Tackle and small gear
- 23-Piece Pocket Emergency Fishing Kit ($15). A small 23-piece kit in a compact case. Handy as a backup in the bucket or the truck.
- Bait or small jigs, as recommended locally.
- A bucket to sit on and carry gear in.
- Something to cut or drill the hole, or a spot where holes are already open. Many beginners start by joining someone who has an auger.
Light and warmth
- Rechargeable Hand Warmer with Digital Display ($29). USB-rechargeable and double-sided, sized for a coat pocket on the ice.
- Rechargeable COB Headlamp, 4000 mAh ($29). Early mornings on the ice start in the dark. Hands-free light that charges over USB-C.
- Rechargeable Camp Lantern, 4500 mAh, Magnetic Base ($39). Light for a shelter or the tailgate, with white, warm and red modes.
- Layers, a warm hat, waterproof boots and spare gloves. Wet gloves are the fastest way to end a trip early.
Keep things dry
The Camo Roll-Top Dry Bag, 10 L ($22) holds a phone, keys, spare gloves and snacks, and keeps slush and meltwater out.
The short version
- Check the ice, bring a partner, and know the regulations.
- A short ice rod, a small reel, light line, and bait or jigs.
- A hand warmer, a headlamp, layers and spare gloves.
- A dry bag for the things that cannot get wet.
